The Happy Space

Ridley Park, Blyth

‘The Happy Space’ popped up in Ridley Park on a sunny September weekend to delight and engage audiences. Visitors enjoyed a joyous programme of creative activities inside and outside our colourful inflatable dome. Designed to be accessible and inclusive, we offered storytelling, craft activity, children’s yoga and live performances featuring puppetry and audience interaction. Our aim was to spread some joy and happiness to the community of Blyth.

About The Happy Space
  • Held at : Ridley Park, Blyth

  • From : 6 - 7 September 2025

  • Visitors : 400

The Happy Space’ was funded by Blyth Celebrates as part of a year of cultural activity shining a spotlight on the town’s vibrant community, rich heritage, and exciting future.

The Happy Space welcomed over 200 visitors over the weekend. The space provided a safe, inclusive environment where families could fully engage in activities and feel valued. The professional and dedicated team ensured a positive experience for all, with many visitors proudly sharing their creations. This project was supported through the Blyth Celebrates Fund, which helps artists, organisations, and community groups bring creative ideas to life.

Artists featured were story-teller and performer Elena Joy-Miller; story-teller Danielle Slade, artist Adam Bligh and the creative team from ‘Faboo News’. Puppets ‘Kai’ and ‘Al’ also brought a bit of mischief and fun to the event.

The event offered a variety of attractions that kept audiences engaged. Key activities included:
Sensory Storytelling: A wonderful session led by artist and performer, Elena Joy-Miller based on a children’s picture book. This was a dynamic session that responded sensitively to the needs of the audience and was extremely inclusive.

Live Performance: A puppet company from Cumbria joined us to perform ‘Faboo News’ a new performance piece which encouraged audience interaction. A highlight was their walk about with the puppets ‘Kai’ and ‘Al. Members of the public were encouraged to share their good news stories and given the chance to appear on ‘Faboo News’ YouTube channel.

Creative Activities: A different activity and take-away product was designed by artist Adam Bligh for each day. On Saturday participants were encouraged to decorate clouds with their happy thoughts and on Sunday make elaborate 3d paper sunflowers. The sunflowers proved a huge success and a great ‘in the moment’ marketing tool.

Thought Stones: An activity that appealed to all young and all, involving the selection, rolling, moulding and combining of brightly coloured fimo. Moments of calm and mindfulness were frequent. These gorgeous thought stones could then be taken home to bake and keep forever.

Yoga Stories: A highly engaging session for children of all ages led by Danielle Slade, writer and yoga teacher, designed to allow self-expression and freedom.

Good News Creative Writing: A chance to design and write a postcard to a loved one whilst spreading some positivity
